ICONIC expands its biomethane corridor between Rio and São Paulo and now has 50% of its fleet running on renewable fuel

ICONIC, a joint venture between Ipiranga and Chevron in the lubricants, greases, and fluids sector, has expanded its logistics decarbonization project along the Rio–São Paulo corridor by expanding its biomethane-powered fleet.

The operation, which began in 2025, now has 50% of the vehicles serving that route running on biomethane, with prospects for further growth throughout 2026.

The initiative is part of the so-called biomethane “blue corridor” between the company’s plant in Duque de Caxias (RJ) and the Americana (SP) facility, with logistical support in the Guarulhos region and operations via the Via Dutra highway. The project represents one of the company’s key initiatives to reduce emissions associated with road transport, a significant component of its carbon footprint.

According to ICONIC’s Logistics Manager, Márcio Ouchi, the choice of biomethane was the result of a technical and strategic assessment focused on environmental efficiency and operational safety. “Biomethane offers energy capacity equivalent to CNG, but with significantly greater emission reduction potential, reaching up to 99% in dedicated operations. That is why we believe it was the best solution to begin decarbonizing our logistics,” he states.

The vehicles used are factory-standard models designed to run on biomethane, requiring no modifications, ensuring safety and reliability. The average range of approximately 650 kilometers allows for covering a large portion of the route between the states, with the flexibility to refuel with CNG in emergency situations, leveraging the existing infrastructure in the Southeast.

Currently, the corridor already accounts for a growing share of trips between the São Paulo Metropolitan Region and Duque de Caxias, with 50% of the dedicated fleet operating on renewable fuel and a goal of gradual expansion. The pilot project began in November 2025, initially with two vehicles, expanded to four, and now has seven trucks in operation, establishing the route as a benchmark for low-carbon logistics in the transport of lubricants.

The supply of biomethane is supported by Ultragaz, while the logistics operation utilizes retail stations along the route. The strategy also seeks to reduce dependence on diesel and mitigate exposure to fossil fuel price fluctuations, while contributing to the reduction of emissions and air pollutants.

The expansion of the corridor is taking place against a backdrop of advancing public policies focused on biomethane and the decarbonization of transportation, including incentives for production and the expansion of supply infrastructure. For ICONIC, the initiative reinforces its commitment to sustainable solutions and innovation in the logistics chain.
